“This is the Fast I Want”…. Put an End to Labor Trafficking
As a member of the Coalition of Catholic Organizations against Human Trafficking (CCOAHT) we are invited to join the Labeling for Lent Campaign to combat trafficking in the seafood industry. During Lent we urge seafood producers, distributors, and retailers to make public, through product labeling or other means, their efforts to fight human trafficking in their product supply chains. Catholic Sisters against Human Trafficking (USCAHT) has created an online petition . Sign the petition here. I have also ordered postcards to send to Sysco and other distributors. If your convent house would like some let me know how many and I will mail them to you.
“This is the Fast I Want”… Welcome the Stranger
This past Thursday Bishop Mario Dorsonville, Auxiliary bishop of Washington and Chairperson of USCCB”s Committee on Migration testified at a hearing on the The Current State of the U.S. Refugee Program before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship. Bishop Dorsonville reviewed the Catholic Church's history of resettling refugees in the US, noting the assistance provided by Catholic organizations to resettle and welcome refugee families in U.S. communities. He highlighted Catholic social teaching which guides us to welcome the stranger. Click on the first link for his testimony and on the 2nd link for the written statement that LCWR has submitted for the record. http://docs.house.gov/meetings/JU/JU01/20200227/110569/HHRG-116-JU01-Wstate-Dorsonville-RodrguezT-20200227.pdf
“This is the Fast I Want”…. Protect All Life
On Tuesday, the U.S. Senate failed to advance the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (S. 3275) and the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act(S. 311). In the Senate, 60 votes were needed to advance the bill to a vote on passage. The Pain-Capable bill would protect unborn children from late-term abortions. It failed to advance by a vote of 53 to 44. The Born-Alive bill would prohibit infanticide by ensuring that a child born alive following an abortion would receive the same degree of care to preserve his/her life and health as would be given to any other child born alive at the same gestational age. It failed to advance by a vote of 56 to 41.
Both NJ Senators Booker and Menendez and NY Senators Gillibrand and Schumer voted against these bills. Pennsylvania Senators Casey and Toomey voted for the bill. You can let your Senators know how you feel about their vote by going to Google, typing in NCHLA and then go to the far right of the screen and click on “Take Action.” On the drop down click “Action Alerts” and look for “Let Your Senators Know How You Feel” about their votes on the two different issues. There is a letter to the right that will help you with your response. If you want to get further involved, there is a campaign called “40 Days for Life”. If you Google that title, you will be able to see where demonstrations are held to support life.
