Take a Stand on Caring for Creation Today
On Nov. 4, the US Administration took action to formally withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, which was signed by 197 countries and which seeks to prevent catastrophic climate change. Scientific evidence for climate change paints a grim picture of the ecological and social effects that will occur sooner than we previously thought. Those who serve in poor countries have witnessed more intense droughts in Central America and East Africa, fires in the Amazon and Indonesia, and powerful storms in Asia and the Caribbean. These climate-related events are exacerbating hunger, poverty, and global migration. We have a moral obligation to protect the most vulnerable people. Pope Francis in Laudato Si', urges all people to hear "the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor" what has become a refrain for many who join the pope in calling for action to address a climate crisis. Pope Francis has pledged full support of the Holy See to the Paris Agreement. LCWR said it was "profoundly troubled" by the White House's move. "The failure of the US to fulfill its 2015 commitment will dishonor our nation and threaten our common home. Catholic teaching is clear: climate change is a grave moral issue that threatens our commitment to protect human life; to exercise a preferential option for the most vulnerable; to promote the common good; and to care for God's creation," (Sr. Carol Zinn, LCWR)
Prayer: God of all creation, we ask you to help us to work with other countries to protect our common home. Help lawmakers see that climate change is a moral issue and that we all need to hear the cry of the earth and commit to caring for creation. Amen.
Action: Email members of Congress and urge them to publicly oppose the US’ withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement. Go to www.maryknollogc.org . Click on: Urge Congress to oppose US exit from Paris Climate Agreement. Follow the link.
Take a Stand on Caring for our DACA Brothers and Sisters
As the Nov. 12th hearing date approaches, join the Catholic network as we unite to defend the dignity of DACA recipients through prayer and action.
Prayer: Pray the rosary on Nov. 12th in defense of DACA and in solidarity with those who will be advocating and praying the rosary in DC today.
Action: Call your Senators and urge them to stand in support of young adult migrants by supporting legislative protection for DACA and the Dream Act of 2019, S. 874. Call the US Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to your Senators.
Suggested Text: As a person of faith and a Catholic sister, I want to express my strong support for the "Dream Act of 2019" (S. 874). The young people protected by this bill are our neighbors and friends. They are mothers and fathers of U.S. citizens. They are important members of our community and leaders in our parishes. As Catholics, we have long supported DREAMERS as we believe in protecting the dignity of every human being, especially that of our children. (DACA) is a program that has benefited over 800,000 young people by ensuring that recipients are able to live their lives free of the anxiety that they could be deported at any time to a country they do not know and separated from their families. I urge you to: Support and co-sponsor S. 874, the Dream Act of 2019; and continue to work towards legislative reform of our immigration laws. Be assured of my prayers and please know that Catholics stand with you in support of the DREAM Act of 2019, S. 874.
