REDUCE GUN VIOLENCE While we don’t fully understand the motives yet in the recent killings of innocent people in Atlanta and Colorado we do know that racism and easy access to firearms cause violence and death that overwhelmingly impact minority communities. Incidents of gun violence happen far too frequently in this country. What can we do?
IMMIGRATION UPDATE Good News for Dreamers On March 18, the House voted to create a path to citizenship for 2.5 million undocumented immigrants, including those known as Dreamers. In a vote of 228 to 197, the House moved to set up a permanent legal pathway for the undocumented immigrants. Later the House voted 247-174 to send the Senate bipartisan legislation that would allow undocumented farmworkers to earn legal status. Advocate for Migrant Children According to the Washington Office on Latin America, “4,500 unaccompanied children were stuck in Border Patrol stations and processing centers as of March 18. The agency’s austere holding facilities—which resemble the holding tanks in a local police station or, as some say, 'cages'—are not designed for vulnerable populations. As of March 14 when 4,200 kids were in Border Patrol facilities, about 3,000 had been there longer than 72 hours.” While the pandemic and decades of bad border policy has made processing unaccompanied children difficult, the fact is that detention is a cruel practice that can have severe and life-long psychological trauma. The US must end the detention of migrant children. Instead, we should be using humane, community-based alternatives that have been proven to be effective.
